At first, I wasn't even sure how to eat and drink, but a game patch made those instructions clearer. There are other controller quirks that take some adjustment too.

Any game published on PC needs to have completely sound keyboard and mouse support. You can switch the default controller to the keyboard and mouse setup in the settings as well as remap key bindings, but annoyingly, the game reset to the default controller option after an update. The main screen also instructed me to press A to continue (the controller button, mind you, not the letter key), though I found that the Enter key does the job. I played the game with a keyboard and mouse, which apparently was my first mistake, as Ancestor's loading screen informed me that the game is best played with a controller. This abundance of mechanics is made worse by a confusing control scheme. I doubt most players have the patience to stick with the game, especially since progression is not particularly straightforward. Still, in my time with the game, I was never able to advance far enough to start a new generation, which means that you'll need to dedicate a fair bit of time to see all it has to offer. Within about a quarter of the time I had spent in the last lineage, I had surpassed the total progress of that first lineage. After my first lineage died off and I started a new one, however, the game started to make more sense. In total, I spent about eight hours with the game for several of those hours, I was either frustrated or confused. These animals can stop your lineage's progress in its tracks, as your progression depends on healthy numbers in your clan. You may also encounter temporary buffs and debuffs while out exploring, as well as other deadly predators, including tigers, alligators, warthogs, and snakes. Take comfort in knowing that Ancestor's survival elements are much simpler and more reasonable than those of Metal Gear Survive. This system may sound slightly tedious, but it's easy to manage, since most parts of the forest offer ways to address these needs. If you let all of these levels drain, you could face death.
The outer red circle represents your life expectancy. The next ring, outlined in yellow, shows your stamina, which depletes as you run out of energy. Ancestors' dense and detailed environment does invite exploration, and some may enjoy the open-ended survival aspects, but many players may abandon the game well before experiencing Ancestors' full potential. The PC game's keyboard and mouse controls are also problematic. It's an ambitious premise, but the game's execution suffers from a vague progression system and the lack of clear, moment-to-moment goals.
